How Long Do Braces Usually Take? A Realistic, Parent-Friendly Guide

One of the first questions we hear from parents (and kids!) is:
“How long will my braces take?”

Totally fair question — between school, sports, pictures, and everything else going on in your child’s life, you want to know what to expect.

The good news is that most braces timelines are very predictable. At West Family Orthodontics, we customize every treatment plan, but there are some general guidelines that can help you get a clear picture.

The Short Answer: Most Braces Take 18–24 Months

For the average child or teen, braces typically take a year and a half to two years.
Some treatments are shorter, and some are longer — it all depends on what’s going on with your child’s teeth and bite.

Here’s a simple breakdown:

  • Mild cases: 6–12 months
  • Moderate cases: 12–24 months
  • Complex cases: 24–30+ months

But let’s get into what actually affects the timeline.

What Affects How Long Braces Take?

1. The Complexity of the Case

The main factor is what we’re trying to fix. Minor rotations of teeth only will move faster than correcting an overbite, underbite, or major crowding/spacing issues.

2. Growth & Development

Kids are still growing — which is actually a huge advantage. We can use natural jaw growth to help teeth move more efficiently.

3. How Often Appointments Are Kept

Skipping or delaying appointments can slow things down. Each adjustment is important for continuing steady movement.

4. Brushing & Braces Care

Poor hygiene can lead to swollen gums, broken brackets, and delays in treatment due to slower tooth movement.
We’ll give you all the tools, tips, and gentle reminders to help keep everything on track.

5. Broken Brackets

Life happens!
But frequent broken brackets can set things back since the tooth can’t move while the bracket is loose.

Fast Fact: Braces Don’t Hurt the Entire Time

A common worry is, “Will my child be sore for the next two years?”
Absolutely not.

Here’s what’s typical:

  • Mild soreness for 1–3 days after getting braces
  • Slight tenderness after adjustments
  • Zero pain in between visits

Eating soft foods and taking over-the-counter pain relief (if needed) usually does the trick.

Is There Any Way to Speed Up Treatment?

Yes — a few things help braces move as quickly and smoothly as possible:

  • Keeping every appointment
  • Avoiding hard/sticky foods that break brackets
  • Brushing well and flossing daily
  • Following all instructions for rubber bands (this is a big one!)

When kids are consistent with rubber bands, treatment is faster, smoother, and more predictable.

What About Rubber Bands — Do They Make Braces Take Longer?

Rubber bands (elastics) actually help speed up finishing touches like bite correction.
If your child doesn’t wear them regularly, it can slow down the timeline or they may not get full correction of the bite problem(s.)
If they do wear elastics well? Things stay right on track or can finish ahead of schedule.
